Samsung Network Printer Won't Wake

Yesterday I installed a new CLP-415NW printer for a client. Install was easy and the client loved the print quality. But we ran into one snag....

When the printer went to sleep after 5 minutes (default setting) it wouldn't automatically wake up when you sent a print job. The printer appeared offline and you needed to physically press a button on the printer to wake it up. When it was asleep, you couldn't print to it, you couldn't access the web interface, and you couldn't even ping it.

I figured this was crazy that there has to be an easy solution for it. So, I started looking at settings on the printer and nothing seemed to fit. I tinkered with when sleep occurred, but had no success.

I emailed Samsung support and they provided the following link, which described how to disable bidirectional support in the network port. This had no effect.
Then today I spent a frustrating hour and a half on a web chat with Samsung support. I got the following suggestions, of which none of them fixed anything:
  • Change to a static IP address. I had a DHCP reservation so, this had no effect. However, offline printers can occur when the printer changes IP. So, at least this was relevant.
  • Install a new version of the Samsung  SyncThru software on my PC. This software wasn't in use.
  • Set the sleep timeout to maximum value. This was the final bit where the tech support guy gave up and basically said it would need to print every 60 minutes to avoid needing to wake it  up with a button. Not cool.
Here's the good news. I think I finally found the setting that fixed it.

In the network options there was a setting for Ethernet Power Save that was On. I've turned off this setting and several hours later I'm still able to connect to the web interface and it shows the printer status as in sleep mode.

It makes sense that if this Ethernet Power Save turns off the network connection that you wouldn't be able to wake it up over the network. It's also possible that there is a magic combination of switch and printer that causes the powersave to appear as off to the switch, but some switches may work properly with it. This particular printer is plugged into a small desktop switch in someone's office.

  1. I know that this is an old post, but do you happen to have screen shots of the setting that you are referring to when you say Ethernet Power Save?

    1. Sorry, we ended up returning that printer as it was cranky about alternate paper sizes and ended up being too much hassle for the client. However, the option was named exactly "Ethernet Power Save" in the web interface. I believe it was a setting in the network configuration.

    3. I tried different settings on my Samsung m2070 network conencted printer. Finally used one that said Wake Up Event. I turned it on and now it's working perfectly fine :)

  3. I have had similar problem with ML-2955 and I set this:

Network Settings -> General -> Ethernet -> Ethernet Speed: 100 Mbps (Full Duplex)
    The default value is AUTO.
(I do not have Ethernet Power Saver option).

Additionally I have set on "Machine -> System Setup -> General" that options:

    Auto Power Off: "unchecked"
Power Save - Wakeup Event (Button and Printer): On
    and
Power Save: 1 minute (yes that is work :-)

And my IP is set to static adress and not DHCP.

After that, my printer goes to sleep after one minute and wakes up when I print something.

    3. Just adding a massive kudos here for this. Been fighting with my cheap Samsung M283x printer for years now. Even wired it would eventually stop responding to print requests and require power cycling. Never found anything to fix it and it's been on the latest firmware for a while now.

Adjusted to your recommended settings and knock on wood it is behaving!

  5. Thanks for your help! You helped me solve my problems with M283X (first) and C410 (second), which I suspected was related to sleep/wake issues. The solution worked with my first networked Samung printer, immediately. I could not get the ability to change the settings for my second networked Samsung printer, which is on the same network. I Google searched, and found that I was supposed to login to get the tab that would allow me to change settings. Okay. I did not login for the first printer. Anyway, I did login for the second printer and that printer now works. Of course, now I had to setup login for the first printer. Still shaking my head at not having to login on the first printer on the first go around.

  6. Reading this has helped a lot. My ML2571N always worked perfectly with static IP. When I upgraded router with base 192.168.1.1 rather than .0.1 I knew I would have to revise IP so opted to enable DHCP. I thought the new router was the problem with not waking up but changing back to static IP has sorted everything.

    Thanks a lot everyone

  8. I have a Samsung C480W not waking up from sleep mode. I run the Samsung Printer Diagnostics program that was installed with the driver and is also on the CD. Then it seems working much better. I don't know what was changed. --Dan

  9. Hi Mr. Byron Wright, thanks for this blog-post. I got a C410W printer. Had it for many years now. Always went to sleep. Had a static IP address set for this color printer in my Verizon FiOS -supplied router, and it has only been connected wirelessly. All I did was the following recommendations:

Power Save: set to 1 minute.
IP is set to static and not DHCP.

...and it responds to print jobs even if you hadn't sent one in many hours/days.

I did the full print-out of this printers' configuration (via the SyncThru Web Service, click on "Information" on the horizontal purple banner, on left side, on the bottom is "Print Information". Reading this, I saw the firmware revision was from 2014 (about the time I bought it). There is a newer firmware revision, released 206/2017, on the HP web site (the actual OEM manufacturer), located here. Haven't installed it yet, need to find a USB cable to do that (con't be done wirelessly). Here is the URL:

  10. Great! It's finally solved a problem I'd been having for months. Never a problem to wake up the CLX-6260FW on the USB wired connection, but Android mobile phones were giving us huge problems. OK when the printer was 'woken up' and the blue wireless light was on, but absolutely useless when the printer was in sleep mode.

    Timeout set to 1 min
    Assign IPv4 address to manual

    Many thanks!!
